The Benefits of Aloe Vera Juice
After a lot of requests for information on drinking aloe vera, I decided to make it the topic of my next blog post. So here it is!
Aloe vera is an extremely popular natural remedy used both internally and externally. As there’s quite a bit I want to cover, I’m going to focus this post on taking aloe vera internally (drinking the gel, or juice).
So, I guess the first question is…
“Should I be drinking aloe vera?”
Aloe vera is one of these very famous and much-loved health tonics, being used for over five thousand years and touted as a general elixir for pretty much everything, without a lot of science to back up these claims.
However, a more cynical person than I may point out that science probably wouldn’t gain much financial benefit from backing up the health claims of an easily available, easily grown plant.
The main reason aloe vera appears to be so popular is purely because of anecdotal evidence. After all, if your sister’s IBS, your friend’s lupus, your father’s diabetes and your cousin’s fibromyalgia all improved drastically after they started taking aloe vera juice, you wouldn’t really need any more convincing, and there’s plenty of these stories about.
Is Aloe Vera Good For You?
What is for certain is that aloe vera contains:
- All of the 8 essential amino acids the human body needs (up to 20 of the 22 amino acids in total)
- A wide range of vitamins including the antioxidants A, C and E plus B1, B2, B3/niacin, B6, B12 (very rare in plants), folic acid and choline
- A wide range of minerals including magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc, chromium, selenium, sodium, iron, copper and manganese
- Fatty acids which lower cholesterol and help improve general health, particularly of the heart and brain
Aloe vera is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and an antiseptic, helping with detoxification by getting your digestive system fuctioning well (which alone helps keep you healthy, as apparently up to 85% of your immune system is in your stomach).
Put simply, drinking aloe vera seems to help improve your current state of health. If you have a problem such as irritable bowel syndrome, it may help ease the symptoms. If you’re feeling perfectly healthy, you may just find an increase in your energy levels.
However, not all aloe vera juice is created equal, and in order to get the maximum benefits from aloe vera without any possible side effects, you’ll need to know what to look for.
“Which type of aloe vera should I drink?”
One problem that can be associated with aloe vera is its laxative effect. This can lead to stomach pain, digestive disorders, diarrhoea or even worse.
This is easily avoided by drinking ‘inner leaf’ gel as opposed to ‘whole leaf’ gel. You see, the rind of the leaf contains the ‘aloe latex’ where you can find aloin and anthraquinone, which are potent laxatives and pretty toxic to the human body. Some ‘whole leaf’ versions of aloe gel contain both the inner gel and the latex. Some other ‘whole leaf’ versions say they have machine-processed out the harmful compounds, but you can never be sure.
Also, look for ‘inner leaf’ gel which has been hand-filleted. This isn’t (just) because it creates a lovely picturesque scene in your head of fields of rosy-cheeked farmworkers processing everything by hand, but because it’s a more thorough way of taking the pure inner leaf gel from the plant. Filleting machines can’t tell differences in sizes of aloe leaves, can’t seperate the inner gel from the aloe latex as accurately and can’t see if they have picked a good or bad leaf. This will obviously make the aloe vera juice a little more expensive, but there’s not much point paying for an inferior product when you’re taking it for health reasons.
Another thing to bear in mind is how the aloe vera was grown. You won’t want to be drinking pesticide and chemical residues with your aloe vera gel, so it’s best to go organic. It shouldn’t be that difficult to find organically-grown aloe vera as it’s quite a hardy plant, but you could go one step further and go for a product that’s not just ‘organically-grown’ but ‘organic’, particularly if it’s from the European Union, which have stronger organic laws than places like America and Asia.
There’s not much reason to buy a product with less than 99% aloe vera, to be honest (you’ll need a tiny bit of something to help preserve it, which is why it wont be 100%). Read the label and see what else is in your aloe vera drink. There’s absolutely no need for there to be any water added, sugar, sweeteners (including sorbitol, which can irritate the digestive system) or sodium benzonate (an unecessary and slightly controversial preservative). Ideally you’ll want as little as possible in there alongside the aloe vera.
You won’t want to go through all that to find your perfect aloe vera drink and then discover it has been heat-treated, removing a great deal of its nutrients. A cold-pressed or raw aloe vera juice is essential to get your money’s worth.
By the way, there’s no difference between aloe vera ‘gel’ and aloe vera ‘juice’. Sometimes people say ‘gel’ to refer to topical aloe vera, sometimes they use it to emphasise that their drinkable aloe vera juice doesn’t contain extra water, but the words themselves don’t really mean anything.
So, in short, I would go for aloe vera juice that’s:
- Inner leaf
- Highest percentage of aloe juice possible (ideally 99% or over) with minimum extra ingredients
- Cold-pressed or raw
“How should I take it?”
Refrigerate it straight away to help keep it fresh (it also tastes much better cold). You can drink the juice straight, or you can mix it with water or fruit juice if you prefer.
I’d personally take it first thing in the morning, when your stomach is empty and it can be digested straight away.
As for the dosage, it depends on what you’re using it for. As a general health tonic there’s not much need to drink more than 25 or 30ml a day, which will of course make it last much longer. If you want more of a boost, you may want to drink between 60 and 120ml. Ease yourself into it gently and try to listen to your body to figure out the best amount for you.
